|Why contract directly with a motor carrier?
At A&B Marine Trucking/Jabin Marine Transport, we believe that you are always better off contracting directly with a motor carrier instead of with a "transportation intermediary." Here's why:
Broker - The term "Broker" means a person, other than a motor carrier or an employee or agent of a motor carrier, that as a principal or agent, sells, offers for sale, negotiates for, or holds itself out by solicitation, advertisement, or otherwise as selling, providing, or arranging for, transportation by a motor carrier for compensation. A legitimate Transportation Broker must be duly licensed to conduct business as such and have DOT authority on file.
Motor Carriers have their own trucks and qualified drivers. Motor Carriers and Freight Forwarders issue Bills of Lading for the shipment; a Broker does not. A&B Marine Trucking/Jabin Marine Transport is fully licensed as a motor carrier with our own trucks and drivers.
Motor Carriers and Freight Forwarders carry their own liability, cargo, and workmen's compensation Insurance, a Broker does not. A&B Marine Trucking/Jabin Marine Transport carries full liability, cargo, and workmen's comp insurance.
Accident involving damage to your vessel, Motor Carriers and Forwarders are required by law to carry insurance (Brokers have no insurance obligation. Motor Carriers and Forwarders are only required to carry a minimum level of protection, and often don't carry enough coverage to protect the full replacement value of a large vessel.) In the case of a catastrophic accident, if the damage costs exceed the value of their company assets, the expense of repairs or replacement could ultimately be born by you. A&B Marine Trucking/Jabin Marine Transport is fully insured, so you don't have to worry.
Freight Forwarders and Brokers are "Transportation Intermediaries" (acting on your behalf with a Motor Carrier) for which you will compensate them, in addition to paying the actual Motor Carrier fees. Freight Forwarders and Brokers entail additional, sometimes unnecessary costs.
A Motor Carrier will know that the Driver assigned to your move is qualified to move your possession(s), but Freight Forwarders and Freight Brokers will seldom know who will provide the actual transportation until you have signed a delivery contract with them. A&B Marine Trucking/Jabin Marine Transport employs its own team of professional, qualified drivers.
The Broker or Forwarder will then select the Motor Carrier who has quoted them the lowest rate for the job, as their profit results from the differential between what you pay them and what they pay the Motor Carrier. Only a licensed Motor Carrier such as A&B Marine Trucking/Jabin Marine Transport can legally transport your vessel - so why pay more to a broker or forwarder?
We hope the information presented here will help you make a responsible and reliable decision in the selection of a transportation company.
